Why do people aspire to size zero?

Size zero has become a status symbol, encouraged by an environment in which undernourished celebrities don't seem out of place; where caffiene and cigarettes take the place of food and where a dish of "skinny"sushi - and hold the rice is acceptable at most restaurants. But struggling for the definitive dress size has risks.

A shock TV reality program, which covered a top New York model agency, showed one of the Bookers of models, Becky Southwick’s idea of obesity.

The show's star regularly had more than one model in tears, admonishing one because she had a huge 36" hip measurement (size zero is 33 inches). She encouraged many not to eat. The aim was to squeeze hips in to some jeans with size 0 on their label.

Size Zero is a clothes size in the US which is the same as a UK 4, with a waist-size of a miniscule 23 inches.  This article gives the complete measurements for size zero and size double zero.

To achieve size zero, and fit into these tiny clothes, according to experts, girls often lose so much weight their periods stop and their hair falls out. It can also be linked to thinning bone density.

Scarily, there's even a new smaller size than zero, can you imagine? it's called double zero apparently, Desperate Housewives’ star Eva Longoria wears a double 0.

The Perfect Size Zero

The British Fashion Council discouraged designers from using obviously anorexic models for the London Fashion Week. But it didn't ban size zero, sayin to do so could be seen as victimization or refusing work on the basis of their size which constitutes discrimination.

The event was asked to ban models with a B M I under 18, classed as under-weight by the WHO.

If they did this, super-models Kate Moss, Giselle Bundchen and Lily Cole would not get work. The average high fashion model has a BMI of only 16. Models have actually died from losing too much weight in their attempt to match up to such high expectations:

  • Uruguayan Model Luisel Ramos's death was due to heart failure, minutes after appearing in the Madrid Fashion Week. She had fasted for days.
  • Brazilian girl Ana Carolina Reston died from anorexia complications having attempted to live for months by eating just apples and tomatoes

Victoria (posh spice) Beckham spoke out against the skinny fashion, and banned size zero fashion models from her own fashion label.

Could this just be because she wants to be the skinniest model of her label?
